Meeniyan Art Gallery is a community based gallery and could not operate without its dedicated band of volunteers. If you have at least three hours a month to spare, love the arts and want to experience that “feel good” factor that comes from volunteering, then joining this like minded group of people may be just what you are looking for.
What do MAG volunteers do? – They look after the shop at the gallery for one or more three hour shifts.
I wouldn’t know where to start – One of our experienced volunteers would give you one or more training sessions and be on call for your first shift to make sure you are comfortable with all procedures. We also have a detailed “Volunteers’ Handbook” which explains nearly everything you would want to know about operating the gallery. When you commit to being a volunteer, a copy of this Handbook will be emailed to you, and there is also a copy at the gallery for your ready reference.
Is that all there is to it? – Yes. But you don’t have to limit yourself to one shift a month. Many of our volunteers do two or more 3 hour shifts a month and some do double shifts where they are on duty all day. We also have volunteers who don’t work in the shop, but fulfil other functions such as maintaining the website and Facebook page.
If you are really keen perhaps you might like to stand for the Committee? Elections are held at our AGM sometime during August. There really is no limit to the contribution you can make if you decide to become a MAG volunteer.
Is there anything in this for me? – Yes. As well as that wonderful feeling we all get from contributing to a worthwhile project, there are a couple of tangible benefits from becoming a volunteer:
You are entitled to a 15% discount on all your purchases from the MAG shop or gallery. And that’s not to be sneezed at when buying presents for yourself or your family, or adding to your art collection.
The Committee organizes some outings where we visit local artists’ studios, and hear the artists talk about themselves and their practice. This is a great chance for you to get to know your fellow volunteers and increase your knowledge of art and its exponents.
You have an open invitation to our gallery exhibition openings which happen once every month. Again you will meet the participating artists and hear about their inspiration and artistic philosophy. And there is FREE Wine and Nibbles!
Is there any cost to me? – All volunteers must be members of the Gallery to ensure you are covered by our relevant insurance policies. The membership fee is a modest $2.00 per year.
How do I get started? – Please visit MAG and talk to the volunteer on duty. They can give you more information and answer any questions you may have. Then leave your contact details with them, and our Volunteer Liaison Officer or another Committee member will contact you and arrange for you to begin your training.
Best of luck, and welcome aboard!
